One Hand can Feed Another

Mandela Day, celebrated on July 18, is an annual international day adopted by the United Nations. It is more than a celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy; it is a global movement to take his life’s work into a new era and change our world for the better.

As South Africans we embrace the chance to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life for the whole of July.

This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our #MandelaDay will be mostly digital! This means you can volunteer safely from your home or office – by using your skills and interests to help a Cause – online! There is so much good that can be done virtually – coaching, mentoring, finance, tech support, marketing. And of course a monetary donation goes a long way too.

Find something you’re interested in and take part in #MandelaDay!

Using Nelson Mandela’s own words: “It’s in your hands to make the world a better place.”

Some Other Ideas

1). Start a CHANGE JAR for your family.
+ Find all the change in your home .
+ Every time it’s filled, pick a different local cause or charity to donate to.

2). Look for ‘2-for-1’ deals every time you go shopping
+ and give away the second item to Liberty Compassion or a family in need.

3). Give your home a spring clean
+ And give items away to Liberty Compassion or a place in need.

4). Do you have a favourite cashier at your regular shops?
+ Always go to their counter and occasionally bring them a coffee/chocolate to make their shift a little brighter.

5). Pay the bill for someone when the opportunity presents itself. Perhaps the person:
+ Behind you in the line at the coffee shop.
+ Behind you at the grocery shop.
+ At another table at the restaurant.
+ Behind you at a drive-thru

A FULL LIFE IN THE EMPTIEST OF PLACES

If you get rid of unfair practices, quit blaming victims, quit gossiping about other people’s sins,

If you are generous with the hungry and start giving yourselves to the down-and-out, Your lives will begin to glow in the darkness, your shadowed lives will be bathed in sunlight. I will always show you where to go. I’ll give you a full life in the emptiest of places— firm muscles, strong bones.

You’ll be like a well-watered garden, a gurgling spring that never runs dry. You’ll use the old rubble of past lives to build anew, rebuild the foundations from out of your past.

You’ll be known as those who can fix anything, restore old ruins, rebuild and renovate, make the community liveable again.
